Hovinkartano sijaitsee Hauhon pitäjän Sotjalan kylässä, joka on Hauhon vanhin kylä. Rakennettuine piha-alueineen, luonnonpuistoineen, viljelyksineen sekä kiinteine muinaisjäännöksineen Hovinkartano on valtakunnallisesti arvokas kulttuuriympäristö.

Poikkeuksellisen hyvin säilynyt ajallinen kerroksellisuus on tälle kartanoympäristölle leimallinen piirre.

Asutushistoria

Esihistoriallisesta ajasta kertoo kartanon pihlajalehto, jonka läpi vievän luontopolun päässä on poikkeuksellisen kookas suojeltu kuppikivi rautakaudelta (800-1200 jkr.) Kuppikivestä luoteeseen on paikannettu vielä tutkimaton rautakautinen asuinpaikka. Kristinuskon ja Ruotsin vallan leviämisestä kertovat asiakirjamerkinnät Hovinkartanon (Hofgård) alueesta (Ruotsin kuninkaallinen arkisto 1300-l).

Alueiden ja tilojen yhdistäminen kuninkaan käskystä loi pohjan Hovinkartanon suurtilan muodostumiselle. Alueen maakirjat aloitettiin v. 1539. Alkoi aatelinen kausi, jolloin kartanoa omistivat v. 1600-1800 kuninkaan palveluksessa vuorollaan mm.

Hovinkartanon kuppikivi

Kartanon luonnonpuistikossa sijaitsevat pakanallinen uhrilehto ja hyvin säilynyt, poikkeuksellisen kookas uhrikivi. Se on yksi Hämeen kookkaimmista. Siihen on hierretty ainakin 28 kuppimaista syvennystä. Kiven syrjissä on havaittavissa muinaisen rantaveden uurtamia jälkiä.

Nykyinen toiminta

Hovinkartanon kulttuuriympäristöä ja vanhoja rakennuksia pyritään säilyttämään ja korjaamaan perinteitä vaalien. Hovinkartanon taide- ja kulttuurikeskus perustettiin v. 2006. Näyttelyitä on nykyään kartanon pihapiirin 7 rakennuksessa ja taiteilijaresidenssitoiminta tuo kansainvälistä väriä kylän elämään. Taidetoiminnasta vastaa Sotjalan kulttuuri- ja perinneyhdistys ry.

Hovinkartano Manor

The Hovinkartano is located in the village of Sotjala, which is the oldest village in Hauho. With its built-up courtyards, natural parks, cultivated land and permanent antiquities, Hovinkartano is a nationally valuable cultural environment.

Exceptionally well preserved temporal stratification is a characteristic feature of this manor environment.

=History of the settlement of Hovinkartano

A nature trail that ends with an exceptionally large protected cupstone from the Iron Age (800-1200 yrs.) goes through the manor's rowan-tree grove that tells about the prehistoric time. To the South-West from the stone there has been dwellings in the Iron Age that are not yet researched.

Documentation of the spread of Christianity and Swedish rule in the Hovinkartano (Hofgård) region (Royal Swedish Archives 1300s).

Combining regions and farms at the King's command laid the foundation for the creation of a large farm in Hovinkartano. The region's land register was started in 1539. The noble families' season began when the manor was owned by the king in 1600-1800 and by the families of Godenhjelm, Gripenberg, Leopold, Engström and Furuhjelm. Hovinkartano grew into a freehold estate. At that time the manor was built mainly in its present form.

The time of Hilma and August Jansson in 1890-1945 was a powerful period of reform and construction. Own brick factory and a water mill were established. Also a large number of outbuildings were built. The brick building was completed in the late Jugendy period in 1914. Riitta and Risto Tarvainen brought new winds to the manor in the 1980s, when the Jugend building was restored to the art exhibition venue. Taidehovi's first national summer exhibition was opened in 1988.

Sacred grove and Sacrificial stone of Hovinkartano

There is a local pagan sacred grove and a well-preserved, exceptionally large sacrificial stone in the Manor's Nature Park. It is one of the biggest in Häme. At least 28 cup-shaped recesses have been rubbed into it. Traces of ancient shore's water level can be traced back to the rock. Dome stones, or sacrificial stones, are timed 500s. to 1300s and they are usually located in connection with the Iron Age settlement or cemetery. Cup stones are mentioned in ancient poems and spells, according to which the pains and ailments have been deported, ie "struck" into the cups . Still in the 20th century, rainwater in the cups was believed to have a healing effect.

Current activity

The aim is to preserve the cultural environment and old buildings of Hovinkartano and to do repairs respecting traditions. Hovinkartano Arts and Cultural Centre was founded in 2006. Today there are exhibitions in seven of the manor yard buildings. The artist residence activity brings international colour to the village life. Sotjala Cultural and Tradition Association is responsible for artistic activities.
