Taidemuseon yhteydessä on toiminut vuodesta 1975 lähtien myös Julistemuseo.<br /> <br /> Lahden taidemuseo on toiminut vuodesta 1980 lähtien Päijät-Hämeen aluetaidemuseona, jonka piiriin kuuluu Lahden kaupungin lisäksi 12 ympäristökuntaa. Aluetaidemuseo opastaa ja antaa asiantuntija-apua alueen kunnille ja yhteisöille kuvataiteeseen liittyvissä asioissa sekä ylläpitää alueen taideteosrekisteriä. Aluetaidemuseo tekee myös taidekasvatustyötä sekä tuottaa pieniä lainattavia näyttelyitä oppilaitosten käyttöön.<br /> <br /> Lahden taidemuseon kokoelmien perustan, vanhimman ja arvokkaimman osan muodostavat vuonna 1950 entisestä Viipurin taidemuseosta saadut 75 teosta, jotka on talletettu pysyvästi Lahden taidemuseoon. Viipuri-säätiön kokoelma sisältää 1800-luvun ja 1900-luvun alkupuolen kotimaista ja ulkomaista taidetta.
